During FORMAT Festival, Studio DRIFT’s Franchise Freedom, produced by Drone Stories, illuminated the night sky in a breathtaking performance during Phoenix’s set. A fusion of technology, science, and art, this mesmerizing aerial choreography featured a swarm of 300 luminous drones, mirroring the autonomous murmuration patterns of starlings.

Created by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, Franchise Freedom is an ever-evolving, site-specific performance where drones move in unpredictable formations, responding to their surroundings in real-time. Light plays a vital role, with each drone’s intensity and color shifting dynamically to reflect the density and movement of the swarm. This poetic synthesis of nature and innovation transforms the sky into a canvas, offering a one-of-a-kind visual experience that transcends human control.
