Asim Waqif (b. 1978, Hyderabad) is a New Delhi based cross-disciplinary artist whose work combines architecture, art and design, with a strong focus on contemporary urban design. He examines notions of ecology and anthropology whilst challenging classical ideals of sustainability. Waqif’s organic artworks often employ manual processes that are purposefully laborious while the products themselves are often temporary and sometimes even designed to decay. The artist explains his collaborative work further, “When planning a fabrication process, I have become really keen on orchestrating situations such that, given the right kind of resources and materials, each team-member feels encouraged to take creative decisions and collaborate with others to make something together. I want to decentralize the creative decision making process to allow for interference and cross training. I want to be in a situation where it is easy to do complex things because one is prepared for varied eventualities.” For this installation, Waqif worked with over thirty workers for four weeks to bring this piece to life. The work’s title, Chaal (2023), has many meanings that personify its essence: tempo, impulse, trick and movement. Chaal is a site-specific bamboo structure that celebrates Indian craftsmanship and lures viewers through a sonic symphony of nature triggered by participants’ movements and interactions.
